1AS Printing and Collage

This week 1AS were making winter landscape collages with fabric and paper, and printing leaf designs...

They drew their leaf designs into polystyrene board to make the prints

The chidren cut and tore the fabric and paper to make their wonderful winter landscapes: They all used different sizes and shapes.

These look fabulous! Well done 1AS. Next week we will be adding the printed leaves.

Magical Birds with 1AS

This week was 1AS's turn to make their magical birds.
Using images of British birds as inspiration, they began by trying out drawing in their sketchbooks. They used pencil, black fineliners and some children coloured their sketches with oil pastels.

Kingfisher
Bullfinch

Goshawk
They took the parts they liked from the bird images to create thier own birds. They also thought about what magical powers their bird might have....

Raven

These sketches were great. The children then went on to transfer their favourite sketch to the A3 paper.
There were some fantastic ideas - some birds could talk, some could change size, from tiny to huge, so that they could never be captured, and one was a princess that could change into a bird!

We used oil pastels and watercolour washes to create the fabulous plumage (feathers) on their magical birds...

Well done 1AS the birds look wonderful!

1P's Last Session - Teddy Drawing!

This week 1P fed their birds, finished their landscape collages and did some fabulous observational drawing of bears...

We looked carefully at the shapes of the bears and also the texture (how it feels).  We talked about how important it was to keep looking at the bear that we were drawing, and not to draw it from our imagination.

First 1P had a practice with the charcoal to see what effects they could get. They found they could make dark marks, wiggley lines and smudgy bits to give the impression of the texture of the fur...

After experimenting, 1P started drawing their bears...

They drew with charcoal on buff paper - which is a light brown colour

Then they tried out chalk on black A3 paper

They captured the fury-ness and squashy-ness of the bears really well.

Also 1P's teaching assistant made a fantastic display of the landscape collages and the birds - if you happen to be in the year 1 corridor go and take a look.

5S this wee...

This week 5S looked at images of the floating Island called Thilafushi in the Maldives, and we discussed the problem of what to do with the huge amounts of waste and rubbish that we all throw away every single day across the world.
5S are  reading the Iron Woman by Ted Hughes, which is also about these issues.
They spent the first half of the morning making these fabulous drawings of big piles of rubbish.

We started out by doing some warm-up drawings with charcoal, some left and right-handed ones and also 2 minute drawings.

Then we went on to work on some more detailed drawings of objects piled on top of and in front of each other...

thinking about how certain objects are partly hidden.

Then 5S designed their own weird and wonderful machines... thinking about what they would do. These ones are  robotic 'guard pets'.

This machine swims underwater.

These 'Fling Pants' will fly through space...

This flying machine has an invisability device and internet connections!

Another space travelling machine...

And the Flying Shoe machine!
