Rubbish!

The floating Island of Thilafushi is part of the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean, and is entirely made of rubbish. It is growing by the hour, as big shipping containers add thousands of tonnes of rubbish from all around the world to it every day.
It's a big problem! 5M discussed these issues today and spent the morning thinking about how we can recycle the things we use...and use less.

We made some fantastic drawings and paintings from piles of rubbish and scrap things in the classroom with some very careful observation skills.

I love the way the objects are piled up - exploring how things look when they are partly behind and in front of each other.

And these are big, bold and very confident.
We also spent some time making drawings with the opposite hand, which took a lot of concentration, but were really good fun and resulted in some wonderfully wobbly and expressive drawings.

We even did some drawings with our eyes closed - I love the bold, overlapping lines!

After break we thought about what an imaginary recycling machine might look like and what kind of thing it would make, and 5M had heaps of interesting and ingenuious ideas...a lot of them seemed to be edible like this candy floss-maker that recycles snow! We also had a machine that re-used old fruit and turned it into candy floss!

This one would be very popular at the moment - its a sunshine maker...

I love this one - its a pancake machine and I'd quite like one in my kitchen!

This week 1P have started to make their Fabulous Fairytale Birds!

This week 1P were looking closely at birds and thinking how they could make their own magical birds. They started by working in their sketchbooks first. The drawings are lovely...

Then 1P transferred their favourite drawing to large paper:

The children included some lovely details on their birds...

The birds are now ready to be 'fed'

The birds look wonderful 1P, well done.

5S make illustrations based on the Iron Woman by Ted Hughes

This week 5S made some really amazing work inspired by Ted Hughes's book - The Iron Woman.
They started the morning making textured rubbings from charcoal around the school...

and also making prints from textured objects. This one was was from some cardboard .

They also made some beautiful drawings from leaves, branches and other foliage that you might find in a marsh landscape.

We discussed what a marsh looks like and how eerie and bleak the marsh in the book seems...

They used some of their prints and rubbings to mke collaged images of the scene in the book where the Iron Woman emerges from the marsh.

They then drew back into their collages using charcoal.

Well done everyone - you have all made some interesting and very beautiful images!

Class 1B's last session...Birds and Bears

It was 1Bs last session today, but they finished off their landscape collages, fed the birds and made some beautiful bear drawings.

1B have been very busy today. They thought about the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The did some drawings from studying teddy bears, using charcoal to try to get the feel and texture of the bears - and I think they captured the furyness really well!

After trying out charcoal, 1B used chalk on black paper. The bears look lovely and fluffy - great work 1B.

They also finished off their collages by cutting out their beautiful leaf prints and sticking them on to the landscape, as if the leaves were blowing in the wind.

Well done 1B - what lovely work.

Miss Brown has made a lovely classroom display from the landscapes and birds....
