Iron Woman Project Yr.5

Year 5 Iron Woman Project

Today 5G started a new illustration project based on the book they are reading in class - 'The Iron Woman' by Ted Hughes.
It's a fantastic book to illustrate as it's so visually exciting! We started by exploring different ways of making textures - print-making from textured paper and cardboard, material...even wood. We also made rubbings from places around the school and playground using charcoal and graphite and also experimenting with poster paint and wax.
Then we used the prints and rubbings to make collages of the scene in the book of the marsh, when the Iron Woman first emerges from the water.

Here are some of the collaged drawings that 5G made...

We discussed the marsh being a lonely and desolate place and how you could convey this in an illustration.

We talked about the weather...wind and rain blowing across the marsh.

We brainstormed how the iron woman would look emerging from the water, dripping with mud...and how frightened the creatures of the marsh would be.
They made some really amazing illustrations - very atmospheric!
